Peter St. Lawrence is a ceramic and multimedia artist and designer who has been contributing to the Bay Area art scene for the last 15 years, with a specific focus on community work in Oakland. In the last 5 years, he has put himself at the forefront of Oakland’s radical growth and creative re-birth, becoming an integral and important voice in the aesthetic direction of the city. In 2009, Peter co-founded FM; a fine art gallery and community of artist studios centered in the downtown area of Oakland. FM quickly became a major focus of the monthly Art Murmur event: an open studio, gallery walking tour and collection of art openings that has become the central destination for engaging with important local venues showcasing contemporary work.
St. Lawrence received his BFA in sculpture from California College of the Arts in 2001 and has shown his work at galleries nationally, including a collaborative installation for the 2011 Bay Area Now exhibition at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, CA. In 2007, he founded Peter St. Lawrence Design, a floral and interior design company specializing in fine dining restaurant interiors and styling. He continues as owner/operator of the company and has established a distinguished list of design clientele, including Zuni Cafe (San Francisco, CA), Quince Restaurant (San Francisco, CA) and Duende (Oakland, CA) as well as styling for Pottery Barn and Williams-Sonoma. In 2012 St. Lawrence began translating his hand-built vessel work into a product line of porcelain slip cast flasks, objects and home decor which he continues to expand. His current body of fine art work explores the fragility of the corporeal, representing animal and human forms in various stages of animation and considering the grey area between life and death.
